January 29, 2011 : project update

For some time now we’ve been hard at work on this project, and unfortunately we havent been as diligent as we should about updating our project status, leaving many to question where this project stands.

First and foremost, this project continues to make tremendous forward progress. Rest assured the overwhelming majority of this project and labor of love is complete. We have completed edits for all 37 tracks in this epic 3 hour 20 minute performance, compiled from over 8 Terabytes of beautiful high definition footage, and have mixed the audio for the entire performance in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. It’s been no small task.

Secondly, as we mentioned in our previous status update, we’ve been in the midst of a technological bottleneck, while waiting for Ascent Media to complete the “up-resolution” and treatment of the raw footage. Those of you in the know are familiar that Ascent Media is one of the nation’s foremost post production facilities, and they too have contributed their highly valuable services to this project at absolutely no cost. At this point, Ascent Media’s treatment of the footage is very nearly complete, thereby freeing us of the bottleneck. But unfortunately this has caused the project the overwhelming majority of its delay. We hope those out there patiently waiting for this project, realize that ultimately this delay will result in a much higher quality product and will truly be worth the wait.

The next step is quite simple. Once we receive the final pieces of footage from Ascent Media, we will simply “swap out” the normal footage for the higher quality Ascent Media-treated footage, and stitch the edit back together. Then after a final review for sync After that, it’s simply a matter of delivering the footage to our Blu-Ray/DVD author for coding, and then off to the presses for shipping!

Lastly we realize that our lack of updates have created the impression that forward progress on this project has paused. That’s nobody’s fault but our own. We apologize for the lack of updates. If anything its because we’ve been so completely entrenched in this project. But we want it to be known, that forward progress on this project has never stopped, that the wait is ultimately for the sake of the highest quality project possible. And most importantly, that every person’s order will be honored. Though this project is staffed by a group of audio/video and motion graphics professionals, we hope that the public at large can understand this is nonetheless a non-profit endeavor. All those who’ve contributed their efforts to [after all is said and done] have done so without asking for a penny, and do so in what little free time they have available. We hope everyone out there can understand why things have taken longer than we had predicted.

To give you a very very small taste of what’s in store, we hope you enjoy the release of our second trailer showcasing nine inch nails’s final performance ever of [Somewhat Damaged], presented in 1080p HD video, professionally mixed audio, and edited from over 24 HD fan shot sources…. and a small glimpse into the visual and design aesthetics we’ve chosen for the project.

There are several reasons why we chose [Somewhat Damaged] as the preview song for the project. First, it documents a rare and unique performance of the song in that the group makes a drumming sequence mistake halfway through causing things to sound a little “off.” It gave us a glimpse into a more human and fallible NIN – one that could let its guard down… and on a night like that, where devoted fans gathered to see the group they love so much perform one last time… that’s exactly what we needed.

Second, given that NIN themselves also recently released a performance of Somewhat Damaged from their Wave Goodbye tour, we thought it would be interesting to highlight the different energy of the same song from the fan-shot perspective.

Third, as a group, we all think that Somewhat Damaged is just a bad-ass song. So we hope you enjoy it.

Our Best,
